Marie Kondo your social media
Spring is almost sprung, and for many that means giving our homes a thorough tidy out. But have you ever thought that this might also be a great time to spruce up your social media?!
As the weather starts to heat up, we are taking inspiration from the best selling author and acclaimed tidying expert, Marie Kondo, who says:
“THE OBJECTIVE OF CLEANING IS NOT JUST TO CLEAN, BUT TO FIND HAPPINESS LIVING WITHIN THAT ENVIRONMENT.” – MARIE KONDO
We can all do with more happiness, especially in the strange year that has been 2020 so let’s find some! Here are our top 5 tips to simplifying, streamlining, and finding joy in our social media this Spring:
1. UPDATE YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA PROFILES
Social Media profiles have changed a lot over the last 12 months, and if you blinked, you might have missed it. Here are some things that might need a bit of an update:
Clear out old, no longer relevant content.
Double-check your opening hours
Re-check your links are working
Update your LinkedIn profiles
Add a LinkTree to your Instagram profile to help people access content from your website more easily.
Update your passwords
“IT’S A VERY STRANGE PHENOMENON, BUT WHEN WE REDUCE WHAT WE OWN AND ESSENTIALLY ‘DETOX’ OUR HOUSE, IT HAS A DETOX EFFECT ON OUR BODIES AS WELL.”
2. REVIEW YOUR ADS
Get stuck into the data, and work out which ads have performed well for you, and which haven’t. It’s also a great time to look at some of the ‘new’ ad types that are out there, including Instagram Stories and Canvas Ads.
And finally, you wouldn’t be reading a FLAMANKO blog without a pitch for video ads. Shake off the winter reluctance and just give it a go!
“NOW IMAGINE YOURSELF LIVING IN A SPACE THAT CONTAINS ONLY THINGS THAT SPARK JOY. ISN’T THIS THE LIFESTYLE YOU DREAM OF?”
3. INVESTIGATE TIME-SAVING TECH
We are currently loving:
Canva, for pretty much everything (although we won’t admit that to a Graphic Designer!)
Trello for team communications and planning
Later for Instagram scheduling and reporting. Other popular tools include Iconosquare, Buffer, Schedugram and good old Hootsuite
Video creation tools such as InShot Video editor, and LumaFusion
Instagram Story creation Apps such as Mojo Video and Story Luxe
Facebook Bots. For auto-responses to basic questions. This one does require a bit of tech-savvy.
“A DRAMATIC REORGANIZATION OF THE HOME CAUSES CORRESPONDINGLY DRAMATIC CHANGES IN LIFESTYLE AND PERSPECTIVE. IT IS LIFE TRANSFORMING.”
4. CHECK OUT THE COMPETITION
We like to do this every 6 months or so as part of our standard strategy review processes. However, Spring does tend to give us a little bit more motivation to put our investigative glasses on and check out what our client’s competitors are doing. While it’s tempting to go straight to vanity metrics such as follower numbers, we suggest going a bit deeper. Skip the quantitative analysis and go for the qualitative. For example:
What type of content are they creating and how often are they sharing it?
Which content is performing well?
Which content is most shared, commented on, etc?
How have they chosen to use videos and images?
Which social media influencers are they interacting with?
Are they active on networks you aren’t?
“IT IS THE SAME WITH PEOPLE. NOT EVERY PERSON YOU MEET IN LIFE WILL BECOME A CLOSE FRIEND OR LOVER. SOME YOU WILL FIND HARD TO GET ALONG WITH OR IMPOSSIBLE TO LIKE. BUT THESE PEOPLE, TOO, TEACH YOU THE PRECIOUS LESSON OF WHO YOU DO LIKE, SO THAT YOU WILL APPRECIATE THOSE.”
5. MOVE FORWARD WITH A FRESH SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGY
Once you’re given your accounts a good review and cleanout and you’ve got some big picture perspective, take a step back and think about what your strategy for the coming year might look like. A great place to start is by asking the question: ‘why.’
Social Media is about much, much more than posting pretty images. Ask yourself, what is the purpose of all of my activity? What are we trying to achieve for the business? Why does my business exist? What lights my fire? What do great results look like? Getting clarity on your purpose and objectives will help you put your time into the areas that count. giving you more time to enjoy more of your life!
We’ll finish here with another great Marie Kondo quote:
“PEOPLE CANNOT CHANGE THEIR HABITS WITHOUT FIRST CHANGING THEIR WAY OF THINKING.”
We couldn’t have said it better. Here’s to happiness!!
